When we opened our doors December 9, 1976, the British Columbia wine industry was just getting started. Our wine list had three wines in the “Canadian Wine” section, a 1972 Pinot Noir from Casabello Winery in Penticton, and two white wines named Baby Duck something.
More than three decades later, the Ducks are gone and we are proud to offer over a hundred fantastic wines on our list, featuring dozens of familiar and new wineries for you to explore, one sip at a time

Pinot Noir
Known as "the heartbreak grape" due to its often pernickety nature in the vineyard and cellar. This variety was introduced early to the British Columbia wine industry because of its reputation as a "cool climate" variety. Pinot Noir is complex and fruity, often with vibrant cherry aromas and subtle earthy characteristics.

Syrah/Shiraz
"An ancient variety, originating in the region surrounding the Persian city of Shiraz. In the 6th century the Greeks took it to the Rhone Valley of France. It was imported to the Okanagan Valley in 1991 from Valence, in the Rhone Valley." The first commercial crop harvested in 1993 by Nichol Vineyards. France still refers to it as Syrah and it is known as Shiraz in a host of other countries including Australia.

Cabernet Franc
This early ripening cousin of cabernet sauvignon produces crisp, fragrant wines with a dark red-blue hue. Cabernet franc plays an important supporting role to its grander relative or to merlot in Bordeaux-style blends.

Merlot
Originally found in the Bordeaux regions of France, Merlot along with Cabernet Sauvignon are the stunning components of many Bordeaux wines. Merlot is renowned as the primary varietal in the great wines of Pomerol and St. Emilion. British Columbia's Merlot ripens earlier than other Bordeaux reds and is softer, more supple and is more approachable in its youth.

Meritage and other Red Blends
The term Meritage (rhymes with Heritage) was coined in 1988 to identify wines blended to reflect the Bordeaux tradition. The term is used by wineries that have used any combination of the red Bordeaux varieties; Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Gros Verdot, Malbec, Carmenere, and St. Macaire. These are full bodied wines with lots of aging potential.

Pinot Blanc
The variety was introduced in British Columbia with the German name of Weissburgunder. Pinot Blanc is a mutation of Pinot Gris which is itself a mutation of Pinot Noir. The origin of this varietal can be traced back to France to the 14th Century and is widely grown through out Europe. In general, in British Columbia, Pinot Blanc is produced in two fashions; warm and spicy with the influence of oak or crisp and clean when fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Chardonnay
One of the noble varieties, the original plantings of this varietal came from Washington State and were initially planted in the Okanagan in the 1960’s (although not planted in
any major quantities until 1974). Although cuttings are still brought in from Washington,
selections are imported from around the globe to add to the variety and complexities of the wines produced. This classic grape is known for its rich, buttery flavour. When young, the flavour can resemble apples with a slightly vanilla quality.

Riesling
This variety, originating in Germany, was introduced to the Okanagan Valley as early as the 1930’s by the Rittich Brothers and reintroduced in 1974 by the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture. When grown in well exposed locations the wine it produces is unmatched in quality. Riesling wine is generally light, flowery, with a refreshing clean, crisp fruit flavour. When the grapes are left on the vine for a Late Harvest wine, it develops an intense honeyed aroma and flavour.

Gewurztraminer
This variety was introduced into British Columbia by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1974 and has proven to be winter hardy. The origins of Gewurztraminer lie in Eastern Europe and today this grape is one of the major varietals in the Alsace area of France. The wines are known for their classic spicy character and pronounced varietal aroma and flavour.
